CSM John W. Foley

Command Sergeant Major, USASMDC

CSM John W. Foley assumed responsibility of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command on March 3, 2023.  USASMDC develops and provides current and future global space, missile defense, and high-altitude capabilities to the Army, joint force, and its allies and partners, to enable multi-domain combat effects; enhance deterrence, assurance, and detection of strategic attacks; and protect the nation.

CSM Foley, a native of Panama City, Florida, graduated from Niceville High School in 1989. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 12, 1989, as a 16T, Patriot missile crew member, and attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Bliss, Texas. CSM Foley graduated from Trident University International with an Associate of Applied Science in administrative management and a Bachelor of Science in business administration (human resources).

CSM Foley’s previous nominative-level CSM assignments include: command sergeant major, U.S. Army Recruiting Command and Fort Knox, Kentucky (July 2020-February 2023); post command sergeant major, U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill, Oklahoma (July 2018-July 2020); and command sergeant major, 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii (May 2016-June 2018).

His other CSM assignments include: brigade command sergeant major, 188th Infantry Brigade, Fort Stewart, Georgia (August 2015-May 2016); brigade command sergeant major, 108th ADA Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina (August 2013-July 2015); and battalion command sergeant major, 2-1 ADA, Camp Carroll, Korea (July 2009-July 2013). He also served as G3 operations sergeant major, 94th AAMDC, Fort Shafter, Hawaii (June 2008-July 2009).

CSM Foley’s military education include all levels of Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System, First Sergeant’s Course, Army Recruiter Course, Anti-terrorism/Force Protection Officer Level II Basic and Advance Courses, Basic Airborne Course, Army Space Cadre Basic Course, and the Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education Course. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy-Class 58, the Battalion and Brigade Pre-Command/CSM Courses; Sergeants Major Executive Force Management Course; Nominative Leader Course and the Command Senior Enlisted Leader Keystone Course at National Defense University.

CSM Foley’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (fifth award); Meritorious Service Medal (fifth award); Army Commendation Medal (fourth award); Army Achievement Medal (sixth award); Good Conduct Medal (11th award); National Defense Service Medal (BSS); Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal (BSS), Korean Defense Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (Numeral 6), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (Numeral 10), Kuwait Liberation Medal, Gold Army Recruiter Badge (two Sapphire Stars), Basic Parachutist Badge, and the Army Senior Space Badge. He is a member of the Honorable and Ancient Order of Saint Barbara, as well as the United States Army Europe and Africa Sergeant Morales and U.S. Army Forces Command Sergeant Audie Murphy Clubs.

He is married, and they have six children and five grandchildren.
