Colonel David R. Baxter assumed duties as the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command on Aug. 19. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he has held leadership positions from platoon leader to brigade commander.
He most recently served as the assistant commandant, U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery School, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was previously assigned as the commander, 30th ADA Brigade, Fort Sill, and as chief, Combatant Command Integration Cell, at the Missile Defense Agency.
Additional command assignments include battalion commander, 1st Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery, 32nd Air and Missile Defense Command, where the battalion deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; commander, C Battery, 1st Battalion, 56th Air Defense Artillery, Fort Bliss, Texas; and commander, A Battery, 5th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery, Fort Bliss.

COL Baxter graduated from the U.S. Military Academy with a Bachelor of Science in political science (international relations-Russian area studies). He earned a Master of Arts in human resource management from Webster University and is a graduate of the National War College with a Master of Science in national security and strategic studies.
