Colonel Michael F. Dyer assumed command of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s 1st Space Brigade on June 26, 2025.
Dyer was born in Dover, N.H. He was commissioned as an aviation officer from the University of New Hampshire in 2002. His military education includes the Aviation Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Command and General Staff College, and the Naval War College. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Science in Space Systems Operations Management from Webster University.
Upon graduation from flight school at Fort Novosel, Ala., Dyer was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 6th U.S. Cavalry (later reflagged as 3-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion), at Stork Barracks, Germany. There, he served as an assistant operations officer, battalion intelligence officer, and III/V platoon leader in garrison, as an attack helicopter platoon leader while deployed to Afghanistan, and as an attack helicopter company commander while deployed to Iraq. Upon return from Iraq, he was assigned as the battalion adjutant and then operations officer for 1-14th Aviation Regiment, Hanchey Army Heliport in Fort Novosel. Dyer then served as the brigade aviation officer for the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT), while deployed to Afghanistan. Upon redeployment, he served as the deputy G3 aviation director for XVIII Airborne Corps at Fort Bragg, NC. Dyer then transferred to the space operations functional area through the voluntary transfer incentive program and served as an Army Space Support Team OIC in 2nd Space Company, 1st Space Battalion. He then commanded the 2nd Space Company and subsequently served as the executive officer of the 1st Space Battalion. Dyer then served at the National Space Defense Center at Schriever Space Force Base, Colo., where he served as a mission director, chief of plans, and chief of standardization and evaluation. Dyer then commanded the 1st Space Battalion and served as the deputy commander of the 1st Space Brigade until attending the Naval War College. Upon completion of Naval War College, he was assigned as the director of Force Development for Space Forces - Space at Schriever Space Force Base, Colo.
Dyer’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), Air Medal for Valor, Air Medal (3 Awards), Army Commendation Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), Army Achievement Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (2 Awards), NATO Medal (ISAF), Combat Action Badge, Army Senior Aviator Badge, Parachutist Badge, and the Army Master Space Badge.
Dyer is married, and they have three children.
