COL Mike Hatfield is originally from Beallsville, Ohio, where he enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve as a 91B combat medic. He is a 1996 graduate of the Ohio University ROTC and commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery. COL Hatfield initially served in the Ohio Army National Guard as a platoon leader/FCO for A-Battery, 2-174th (Hawk). He completed his company-grade assignments with the 2-174th ADA Battalion (Avenger) as a Stinger platoon leader, Avenger platoon leader, battery executive officer, battalion S-4, and Headquarters and Headquarters Battery commander. In 2003, he mobilized his battery in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In December 2003, COL Hatfield transferred to the Colorado Army National Guard on full-time status with the 100th Missile Defense Brigade. This was a career transition from ADA platforms to the emerging Ground-based Midcourse Defense ballistic missile defense enterprise. COL Hatfield has seven years of GMD crew experience serving at the Missile Defense Element at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, and the Fire Direction Center located at Fort Greely, Alaska. His GMD experience includes: S-3 operations/planner, MDE current operations officer, MDE deputy director, Fire Direction Center director, and MDE director. He has supported a multitude of GMD ground tests, flight tests, Tier-1 exercises, joint warfighters, and periods of elevated operations. COL Hatfield’s key developmental assignments include batter commander, battalion executive officer/AO at the 49th Missile Defense Battalion, and brigade S-3/AO at the 100th Missile Defense Brigade. His broadening assignments include brigade S-3/AO of the 168th Regional Training Institute supporting the COARNG multi-component school house and recently as the Senior Guard Adviser to USASMDC.
COL Hatfield’s military education includes: ADA Officer’s Basic and Advance courses. The GMD Basic and Advanced Qualification courses, the Combined Arms Services Staff School, the Space Operations Officer’s Qualification Course, Air Force Space 200, the Command and General Staff College, Air Force Space 300, and Joint Professional Military Education Phase I & II. He is a 2018 resident graduate of the Senior Service College at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. COL Hatfield’s civilian education includes undergraduate degrees from Hocking College and Ohio University, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.
His awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal (four oak leave clusters), Army Commendation Medal (three oak leave clusters), Army Achievement Medal (three oak leave clusters), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (three oak leave clusters), numerous federal and state awards, and the Army Master Space Badge.
COL Hatfield is married, and they have four children.
