A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, COL Matt Schreiber currently serves as U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s deputy commander for operations. COL Schreiber began his military career in 1994, enlisting in the United States Army Reserve as an 11B Infantryman. He received his commission as an armor officer from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1998, and the Army later designated COL Schreiber as a Functional Area 40 space operations officer in late 2006. He is a graduate of the Armor Officer Basic Course, the Infantry Captain's Career Course, Airborne School, Intermediate Level Education Common Core, the Space Operations Officer Qualification Course, the Joint and Combined Warfighting School, the United States Army War College, and numerous other United States Air Force space-related schools and courses.
Following graduation from the U.S. Army War College in 2018, COL Schreiber served as U.S. Army Central’s Chief, G31 Special Activities Division (Space/Cyber Electromagnetic Activities/Special Programs), and in a special assignment as the USCENTCOM Forward J3/Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Other previous non-command assignments include service as a tank platoon leader, scout platoon leader and brigade reconnaissance troop executive officer in the 3rd Brigade, 3ID; S1 in 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox, Kentucky; Military Transition Team Armor Battalion executive officer in Taji, Iraq; assistant brigade S3, 1st Space Brigade, and battalion S3, 1st Space Battalion, USASMDC; chief of the Space Systems Branch, Joint Chiefs of Staff/J2; Missile & Space Domain chief and chief of the Standardization and Evaluation Branch, North American Aerospace Defense Command-United States Northern Command; and brigade S3, 1st Space Brigade.
COL Schreiber’s command assignments include: C Troop, 1st Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox; commander, Headquarter and Headquarters Troop, 2nd Squadron, 16th Cavalry Regiment, Fort Knox; and detachment commander, 1st Space Brigade, forward deployed to the United States Central Command area of operations; His most recent assignment was as the deputy chief of staff,G3, USASMDC.
COL Schreiber holds a Master of Science in space systems operations management from Webster University and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal (with two oak leaf clusters), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal (with one oak leaf cluster), the Joint Achievement Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal with (with two oak leaf clusters), the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement, the OIF Campaign Medal, the Parachutist Badge, the Combat Action Badge, the Joint Staff Identification Badge, and the Army Master Space Badge.
COL Schreiber is married, and they have two children.
