Kwajalein Hospital  
Kwajalein Hospital is a 16-bed full-service hospital, staffed and operated by the contractor, which employs U.S. licensed and certified doctors, nurses. And technicians.  The hospital is staffed and equipped to provide inpatient and outpatient care, emergency treatment, basic obstetrics, and general surgery.  A two bed intensive/coronary care unit is monitored 24 hours a day.

 

Medical Services
Imaging services provides routine diagnostic radiographs, including some specialized exams; ultrasound studies, including routine obstetric exams; and mammography exams. Using a low-dose dedicated mammography unit that follows guidelines set by the American College of Radiology and the Food and Drug Administration.

Occupational health programs include medical surveillance examinations for employees, as well as community public health services.

An optometrist from Hawaii sees patients on Kwaj several times a year.

E-mail consultations and video teleconferencing with Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, or other medical specialists, allows access to specialists for patients at Kwajalein who require supplementary evaluation. Periodically, specialists travel to Kwajalein for appointments.

Medical Referrals  
People who develop medical problems requiring special diagnostic  or therapeutic treatment may be referred by a staff physician to specialists in Honolulu.

Pharmacy  
The pharmacy has a basic stock of com only used medications.  Since not all brands of drugs are stocked on island, it is advisable to counter drugs and prescription medications that are used regularly.

Health Services  
A food safety/sanitation specialist is responsible for maintenance of health and sanitary standards for all food service facilities, including snack bars, dining and club facilities, and retail outlets.  Health certification of all food handlers, as well as inspection of food-handling equipment, food processing, transportation, and storage, are included in the program.  Bacteriological tests on potable and non-0potable water samples are performed weekly.

Dental services include emergency relief of pain, examination and diagnosis, dental X-ray, restorative treatment, prosthetic treatment, crown, bridgework, cosmetic treatment and endodontic/periodontal services.  The clinic is staffed with full-time U.S. licensed dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants.

While every attempt is made to accommodate emergencies, there may be a waiting period for routine check-ups and fillings.

An orthodontist visits Kwajalein periodically to accommodate orthodontic case appointments and to provide consultation, examination, and treatment.


Medical Evacuation  
Prospective residents should understand that the scope of services at Kwajalein is limited despite the presence of well-qualified professional staff and services that correspond to a well-run community.

Charges  
Charges for medical and dental care are set by the USAKA/RTS financial rate and policy manual.  Charges of over $50 are billed to the patient and may be assigned to the patient’s insurance.
